  • 1/2 yard of fabric x 2
  • snaps or buttons
  • coordinating thread

How To Make The Baby Pinafore Pattern

Begin by printing the pinafore pattern trimming it from the paper. Tape the two pieces together where indicated.

You should have chosen two coordinating prints of fabric to make the pinafore reversible. You should have 1/2 a yard of each fabric selection. Cut the pattern twice from each fabric cutting on the fold.

The Pattern Cutting Layout

Also cut 2 pieces of 3.5" by 4" fabric for making pockets (optional).

Cut 4 pieces of fabric measuring 3" by 12" for creating ties. You could also use bias tape or ribbon.

Making Fabric Ties And Pockets:

Fold the rectangular fabric pieces (for the ties) in half across width wise and iron in place. Sew a seam down the length with about a 1/4" seam allowance (right sides together). Pull the fabric right sides out and iron. Tuck one end in about 1/4" and iron. Sew a seam to sew it shut.

To create the pockets fold the fabric edges over by about a 1/4" and iron in place. At the top of the pocket (the longer 4" side) fold the edge over again and sew in place. Pin the pockets to the pinafore front using the pattern as a reference for pocket placement. Sew in place, sewing very close to the edge.

A Lil' Extra Embellishment: Another optional step is to embellish the pockets with embroidery, applique, or iron on patches. I sewed on some easy embroidered felt hearts.

Pin the cut fabric (pinafore front/back) together with right sides facing, keeping identical patterns together.

Sew the shoulder strap pieces together on one side only (the left).

Place the pinafore pieces together matching opposite fabrics with right sides facing. Pin the ties in place on the right side so that the majority of the length faces to the inside with just about 1/2" or so facing off the edge of the pinafore. Sew the entire outer edges with a 1/4" seam allowance. Leave the neck open and unsewn.

Turn the fabric right side out. Press out the corners and iron the seams flat.

At the neck iron the edges inward by 1/4-1/2". Pin in place and edge stitch around the neck. Iron the seams need to add a closure

To finish you will need to add a closure, button or snaps to the shoulder strap on the right side. I hand stitched in some snaps. You could even choose to make a tie for this section. Don't be afraid to get creative and try different variations of ties and closures on this pattern. You could even add a bit of detail by sewing in come rick rack or ruffles.
